Doctor Captain Robert Lion was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honour (Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur). He was cited at the order of the Navy with the mention:
“An officer of great charm and limitless dedication, he showed the utmost courage on 6 June 1944 during the attack on enemy fortified positions at Ouistreham by the 1st Battalion of Fusiliers-Marins Commandos. He followed the shock troops, assisting and dressing the wounded. He was struck by a burst of machine-gun fire while crawling toward an advanced position to aid a wounded comrade.”
By decree dated 21 October 1944
This citation includes the award of the Croix de Guerre with a palm and a bronze star.
