“Bellamy (Robert), Lance Caporal Rifleman, service no. 5371FN40: volunteered for the Free French Forces in the Middle East; took part, with his naval infantry unit, in the fighting at Bir Hakeim, where his courage earned him a citation. A volunteer for the commandos, his discipline, character, and modesty earned him the trust and affection of all. During a reconnaissance raid on the Channel Islands in December 1943, he was killed while crossing a minefield with his group.”
Call for Testimonies
The Association des Familles de Commandos de la France Libre works to restore the full history of these men, beyond just June 6, 1944. Testimonies and family archives help keep alive the memory of all the men who served in the unit between 1942 and 1945.
