Volunteered for the Commandos, he took part with his unit in the Normandy campaign and in the landing at Flushing on 1 November 1944. He distinguished himself by exceptional courage: alone, together with his group leader, he held an important crossroads for one hour against a company launching a counterattack, blocking their advance and giving time for reinforcements to arrive. He was mortally wounded during this action.

This citation includes the award of the Croix de Guerre with Vermilion Star.
